Why Dafydd Llwyd?

Dafydd Llwyd HISTORY

Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd is a Designated Welsh medium school that was established in 2001. The school is named after the lord and poet Dafydd Llwyd (1446) who lived in a hall on the mound adjacent to our original site. Due to the influence of Dafydd Llwyd, Newtown became an important cultural centre. We feel that the continuation of the Welsh language and the importance of identity are strongly based in the roots of the school.

After years of discussion and planning, the school is now situated on Plantation Lane, in a building that is purposeful for the twenty first century.

Why Welsh Education?

  • Your child can speak two languages and therefore enjoy two very different cultures.

  • Bilingual children develop other skills such as problem solving and creative thinking skills more quickly than children who speak only one language and often succeed better in school.

  • An increasing number of employers in Wales consider that the ability to speak Welsh is an advantage.

  • Learning a language is easier when you're young - the sooner the better!

Our hope is that the school can influence greatly on the children’s lives through life and learning experiences all within a totally Welsh ethos. Our aim is that every one of us – pupils, staff, governors and parents ‘aim high’ at all times. The school plays an important part in the community and we are extremely proud of the children’s contribution in academic, cultural and sporting areas.

Sports

The school provides a variety of sporting activities in all aspects of Physical Education. The school's Sports Ambassadors play a prominent role in the school's activities and run clubs for Foundation and Primary Learning pupils. We have had National success in a number of sporting events and are very proud of our achievements.

Creativity

Pupils’ creative skills are developed very effectively. Pupils are given regular opportunities to compete in Eisteddfodau and perform in concerts during the year. This enriches their knowledge of their identity and increases their confidence successfully. Opportunities to take part in Art & Craft and dance activities are also regularly organised.

Key Skills

At Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd, a great emphasis is placed on developing the key skills - Literacy, Numeracy, Thinking and Digital across the curriculum. Teachers develop pupils’ Literacy, Numeracy, Digital and Thinking skills by providing a range of opportunities for them to develop across all areas of learning through themes and current topics.

Educational Visits

Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd organises regular educational visits for pupils to enrich their learning both in the local area and further afield. In Years 3-6, pupils get the opportunity to take part in residential visits to places such as Llangrannog, Cardiff and London where they develop a range of life skills.
